Precision vs Accuracy

  • Precision: This is a relative idea. A precise instrument delivers consistent results. In a firearm this means tight groups.

  • Accuracy: This concept is more absolute. An accurate instrument delivers results close to a desired/expected value. In shooting this means hitting the "X" ring.

The following photos attempt to show differences. They are not perfect examples, I know. I didn't have a lot of targets to choose from and these were not acctually shot for this purpose.

I would call this precise but not accurate. The group is reasonably tight but not near the "X" ring.

I call this accurate but not precise. The group is centered around the "X" ring but not very tight.

This is my example for both a precise and accurate target. Try to ignore the flyers in the white and lower black. Aside from those the group is pretty tight with lots of the holes touching. The overall group is reasonably accurate with lots of hits in the "X" ring.

This one is neither precise nor accurate. The holes are not near the "X" ring and it's a stretch to call this a group at all. (Yes I shot this target)
